Overview
Getting your Alabama medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork.
Who issues your license
Alabama takes a two-agency approach. The Alabama Board of Medical Examiners reviews your application, and the Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama is the one that actually issues your license.
Eligibility requirements
To qualify, you'll need a degree from an accredited medical school. US graduates need at least one year of post-graduate training. International medical graduates need three. You'll also pass the USMLE or an equivalent exam and complete a fingerprint-based background check.
How to apply
Everything starts with the FSMB uniform application. The step most people miss? After submitting, you have to click the post-submission link to actually push your data to Alabama. Skip it and your file sits idle for weeks with no follow-up.
What it costs
Budget at least three hundred and seventy-five dollars minimum, covering your FSMB fee, application, background check, and license issuance. If you'll be prescribing controlled substances, add one hundred and fifty dollars for the Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate.
How long it takes
Most licenses take two to three months from submission to issuance. That said, the board recommends applying at least six months in advance because every approval runs on a fixed board meeting cycle.
Where applications stall
The delays we see most often: skipping the FSMB link step, one missing document pushing you to the next board meeting, or letting your certificate of qualification expire. It's only valid for six months.
