Who issues your license
Arkansas licenses both MDs and DOs through a single unified board, the Arkansas State Medical Board. One important thing to know upfront, Arkansas has joined the IMLC in legislation but is not yet actively issuing compact licenses. Every Arkansas application right now is a traditional single-state filing.
Eligibility requirements
You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school and at least one year of post-graduate training for US graduates, or three full years for international medical graduates, with fellowships not counting toward that total. You must pass USMLE or COMLEX with a strict three-attempt limit per step. Applications go to the ASMB by check or money order. The board does not accept online payments for initial applications. You'll also complete a CCVS assessment and a federal fingerprint-based background check through the FBI.
What it costs
Budget around five hundred thirty-six dollars minimum, four hundred for the application, one hundred dollars for the CCVS assessment, and about thirty-six dollars for FBI fingerprinting.
How long it takes
Annual renewal runs five hundred dollars, due on the last day of your birth month. Most licenses take twelve to sixteen weeks from submission. Apply at least four to five months before you need to practice. Any yes answers on adverse event questions will add additional board review time on top of that. The delays we see most often: the check-only payment catching people off guard, IMGs missing the three-year post-graduate rule because fellowships don't count, and the annual birth month renewal lapsing because there's no calendar year grace period.
