Overview

Getting your Colorado medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know, so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork.

Who issues your license

Colorado licenses both MDs and DOs through the Colorado Medical Board under the Department of Regulatory Agencies. All applications go through the DPO Online Services portal. Colorado is a fully participating IMLC state and a valid state of principal licensure, making it a strong home base for physicians who want multi-state access.

Eligibility requirements

You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school and at least one year of post-graduate training for US and Canadian graduates, three years for international medical graduates. You'll pass USMLE, COMLEX, or an equivalent exam and complete a CBI and FBI fingerprint background check. If you hold a DEA registration, the federal eight-hour MATE Act training and a Colorado-specific two-hour substance use disorder course are required.

How to apply

Everything goes through the DPO Online Services portal. One thing that catches people off guard, verifications of every state license you've ever held, including expired ones from training programs, must come directly from the issuing board. That's the most common cause of delay.

What it costs

Budget about four hundred and sixty-one dollars, four hundred and twelve dollars for the application, and roughly forty-nine for fingerprinting. Biennial renewal is four hundred and ten dollars. If you're going the IMLC route, the compact application fee is seven hundred dollars paid to the IMLCC. Most licenses take sixty to ninety days from submission to issuance. The IMLC pathway typically runs about thirty days once the letter of qualification is issued.

How long it takes

Apply at least four months in advance, and note that all Colorado physician licenses expire April thirtieth of odd-numbered years, regardless of when you were first licensed.

Where applications stall

The delays we see most often, forgetting to request verifications from old training state licenses, the DEA MATE Act eight-hour training not being completed before DEA registration, and the twenty twenty-seven CME rule change. Colorado is adding a thirty-hour biennial CME requirement starting that cycle.
