Who issues your license
Louisiana licenses both MDs and DOs through the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners. FCVS is required for all physician applicants. Louisiana also uses CE Broker as its mandatory CME tracking platform. If your credits aren't in CE Broker, you cannot renew. Louisiana is a fully participating IMLC state.
Eligibility requirements
You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school and at least one year of post-graduate training for US graduates.
How to apply
You'll establish an FCVS profile before submitting to LSBME, open a CE Broker account from day one, and if you'll be prescribing controlled substances, file a separate Louisiana CDS license on top of your federal DEA registration. Start your FCVS profile at least four months before your intended start date. It's the dominant scheduling factor. One item that catches physicians at renewal: CE Broker is a hard block. If your CME credits aren't tracked inside CE Broker, renewal is refused regardless of how many hours you've actually completed.
What it costs
The initial application fee is three hundred dollars. FCVS adds roughly four hundred and twenty-five dollars, bringing the real minimum to about seven hundred and twenty-five dollars. Biennial renewal is two hundred dollars. The Louisiana CDS license is approximately twenty-five dollars annually if prescribing.
How long it takes
Most licenses take eight to twelve weeks from a complete submission. Begin FCVS at least four months before your intended start date, not at the same time as your LSBME application. The IMLC pathway typically runs four to six weeks and bypasses the FCVS build entirely.
Where applications stall
The delays we see most often: starting FCVS at the same time as the LSBME application. It needs to be well ahead. The Louisiana CDS license being overlooked when setting up DEA prescribing authority, and the required three-hour board-approved CDS CME course not being completed before the first license renewal.
