Getting your Maine medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork. Maine is one of the few states that still splits physician licensing between two separate boards.
Who issues your license
The Board of Licensure in Medicine licenses MDs, and the Board of Osteopathic Licensure licenses DOs. Both boards require FCVS and the FSMB Uniform Application. Maine is a fully participating IMLC state.
Eligibility requirements
You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school. If you graduated on or after July first, two thousand and four, you need thirty-six months of post-graduate training, more than the one year most states accept. You'll pass USMLE for the MD board or COMLEX for the DO board and pass the Maine Jurisprudence Exam at initial licensure, which is required again every four years.
How to apply
Both boards use the FSMB Uniform Application. Start FCVS at least four to five months before your intended start date. The jurisprudence exam is open book and must be passed before the license issues. It's not difficult, but scheduling it takes time and forgetting it holds up issuance.
What it costs
MD initial fee is seven hundred dollars, which includes the one hundred dollar jurisprudence exam. FCVS adds roughly four hundred and twenty-five dollars, bringing the MD total to about one thousand one hundred and twenty-five dollars. DO initial fee is three hundred and fifty dollars plus the FSMB UA fee. MD biennial renewal is five hundred dollars. DO renewal is three hundred and fifty dollars.
How long it takes
Expect twelve to sixteen weeks from submission to issuance. Apply at least four to five months in advance, longer if no existing FCVS profile. The IMLC pathway is significantly faster, typically four to six weeks, and bypasses both the FCVS build and jurisprudence exam scheduling.
