Overview
Getting your New Jersey medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork.
Who issues your license
New Jersey licenses both MDs and DOs through the State Board of Medical Examiners inside the Division of Consumer Affairs. New Jersey operates a two-bucket fee structure that surprises most applicants. Three hundred and twenty-five dollars is due at application, and a separate eight hundred and five dollar registration fee is due after approval. New Jersey is a fully participating IMLC state.
Eligibility requirements
You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school. US graduates need at least two years of post-graduate training. International medical graduates need three years, all in US ACGME accredited programs. USMLE or COMLEX steps must be completed within a seven-year window. If prescribing controlled substances, you'll file a separate New Jersey CDS registration and enroll in NJ PMP. A one-time six-hour cultural competency CME is mandatory.
How to apply
Applications go to the NJBME.
What it costs
The fee structure is the number one surprise. Three hundred and twenty-five dollars at submission, then a separate eight hundred and five dollar registration invoice arrives after approval. Applicants who budget only three hundred and twenty-five dollars are caught off guard. The NJCDS registration and NJPMP enrollment are separate filings that must be completed before prescribing. Budget at least one thousand one hundred and thirty dollars. Three hundred and twenty-five dollars at application and eight hundred and five dollars at registration after approval. The NJCDS registration adds about sixty dollars. Biennial renewal is eight hundred and five dollars.
How long it takes
Most licenses take eight to twelve weeks from submission. The IMLC pathway typically runs four to six weeks. Apply at least four months in advance.
Where applications stall
The delays we see most often: applicants budgeting only the three hundred and twenty-five dollar application fee and being surprised by the eight hundred and five dollar registration invoice, international medical graduates missing the three-year US ACGME training requirement, and the one-time six-hour cultural competency CME not being completed before the license issues. WhiteGlove handles your New Jersey application from start to issued license.
