Overview

Getting your North Dakota medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork.

Who issues your license

North Dakota licenses both MDs and DOs through the North Dakota Board of Medicine, one of the smallest physician licensing boards in the country. North Dakota is a fully participating IMLC state and a valid state of principal licensure.

Eligibility requirements

Effective August first, twenty twenty-three, the board raised the postgraduate training requirement from twelve to twenty-four months. You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school and at least twenty-four months of ACGME accredited postgraduate training for US and Canadian graduates. International medical graduates typically need three years. You'll pass USMLE, COMLEX, or a board-approved equivalent. Online renewal is mandatory. Paper renewals are no longer accepted.

How to apply

Applications go through the FSMB uniform application or directly to NDBOM. The board works files continuously rather than at monthly meetings, so a complete file moves faster here than at many small boards. A single missing primary source verification is still the most common cause of delay.

What it costs

The initial application fee is two hundred and five dollars plus forty dollars for the background check. The FSMB uniform application adds sixty dollars if used. Biennial renewal is two hundred and five dollars online. Most licenses take sixty to ninety days from a complete submission.

How long it takes

The IMLC pathway typically issues a North Dakota license in four to six weeks. Apply at least four months in advance. The delays we see most often: the August twenty twenty-three PGT change catching applicants who assumed twelve months would be sufficient, missing primary source verifications stalling the file at a board with limited staff, and physicians trying to renew by paper after the board moved to online-only renewal. WhiteGlove handles your North Dakota application from start to issued license.
