Overview
Getting your West Virginia medical license? Here's exactly what you need to know so you can focus on practicing, not paperwork. West Virginia splits physician licensing between two separate boards.
Who issues your license
The West Virginia Board of Medicine licenses MDs at wvbom.wv.gov, and the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine licenses DOs at wvbosteo.org. West Virginia is a fully participating IMLC state. Both boards require a three-hour drug diversion training to be completed within the first year of initial licensure.
Eligibility requirements
You'll need a degree from an accredited medical school and at least one year of ACGME-accredited postgraduate training for US LCME and AOA graduates. Three years for international medical graduates. Both boards require a three-hour drug diversion training completed within one year of initial licensure. The MD and DO curricula are different and must come from board-approved sources.
How to apply
MD applications go to WVBOM at wvbom.wv.gov. DO applications to WVBDO at wvbosteo.org. Filing with the wrong board means starting over and forfeiting your application fee. IMLC-issued West Virginia licenses must be renewed through the IMLC website, not through either board's licensee portal.
What it costs
The initial application fee is four hundred dollars for either board. Background check adds about fifty dollars. MD biennial renewal is approximately four hundred dollars. DO biennial renewal is approximately three hundred and fifty dollars.
How long it takes
Most licenses take two to four months from a complete submission. The IMLC pathway typically issues a West Virginia license in four to six weeks. Apply at least four to five months in advance.
Where applications stall
The delays we see most often: filing with the wrong board and forfeiting the application fee, the drug diversion training one-year deadline being missed. The MD and DO curricula come from different board-approved lists, and completing the wrong one doesn't count. And IMLC licensees renewing through the board portal instead of the IMLC website. WhiteGlove handles your West Virginia application from start to issued license.
